Magnesium overdose
Estimated Reading Time: 2:30 min.
Rare but serious
Hardly any mineral is as important for our body as magnesium. A magnesium overdose or hypermagnesemia is rather rare. However, many people suffer from a magnesium deficiency. Dietary supplements can be useful for treating a magnesium deficiency, but if taken excessively and under certain conditions, too much magnesium can be dangerous.
Avoid magnesium overdose
The human body could not function without magnesium. It ensures that we have enough energy every day by supporting our nervous system, energy metabolism and muscle function, among other things. But how can you avoid overdosing?
By knowing your recommended daily requirement. The German Nutrition Society uses the following guideline values for the daily magnesium requirement of an adult over the age of 25:

Men: 350 mg
Women: 300 mg
Pregnant women: 310 mg
Breastfeeding women: 390 mg

Can too much magnesium be harmful?

Even in the case of a proven magnesium deficiency, magnesium supplements should never be taken excessively, because above a certain amount, too much magnesium is harmful.
If a person's magnesium requirement is exceeded, the kidneys ensure that the body excretes the excess magnesium through the urine. As a rule, therefore, a slight magnesium overdose is harmless. In addition, there are usually no symptoms, so the mild magnesium overdose often goes unnoticed.
A long-term magnesium overdose of 300 mg daily may result in diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. In this case, you should lower the magnesium dosage or pause the intake. If 2500 mg or more are taken daily, a magnesium overdose becomes dangerous: Possible consequences are a drop in blood pressure or muscle weakness. In certain cases, too much magnesium can even cause cardiac arrhythmias. Just as too little magnesium is bad for the heart, so is too much magnesium.
However, side effects may also occur despite compliance with the recommended reference values of magnesium. Typical are flatulence, fatigue or dizziness. In most cases, however, the body must first slowly get used to the recommended dose.
