Was das "Anti-Stress-Mineral" Magnesium für Stress bedeutet

How does magnesium relate to stress and can magnesium deficiency cause stress? Learn more about how magnesium can be used to combat stress. Stress? A good supply of magnesium contributes to normal nervous system function and can reduce fatigue and tiredness.

What does magnesium have to do with stress?

When we are stressed, we mobilize our forces: the heart beats faster, blood pressure rises, and our ability to react is increased. Responsible for this are our stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. One of their natural counterparts is magnesium. Those who pay attention to a magnesium-rich diet in times of stress support the normal functioning of the nervous system and mental function, and also help to reduce fatigue and tiredness. In times of stress, these stress hormones and thus also magnesium are increasingly excreted through the urine.

If there is not enough magnesium, the stress reaction remains at a high level. In addition, the stress hormones stimulate the breakdown of fatty acids, which in turn bind magnesium. This means that although magnesium deficiency cannot trigger stress, they are mutually dependent.

Is more magnesium necessary for stress?

If there is sufficient magnesium in the blood, it reduces the release of stress hormones. Accordingly, it is also known as an "anti-stress mineral". If we are exposed to severe stress, an undersupply can occur because our body needs more magnesium at these times and releases this magnesium against stress from the reserves in the bone tissue.

In times of stress, it is important to ensure an adequate supply of magnesium. Since the organism cannot produce it itself, we have to take in the "anti-stress mineral" through a magnesium-containing diet or supplementary preparations. Only in this way can the magnesium depots be replenished and stored in the bone tissue.

How magnesium deficiency can promote stress
Pay attention to your magnesium supply in stressful times!

In fact, it can be shown that people with magnesium deficiency react more susceptibly to stressful situations. Among other things, magnesium is responsible for the transmission of stimuli in the body. A permanent deficiency of the "anti-stress mineral" can cause various health problems.

If you suffer from the following stress symptoms, these could also indicate a magnesium deficiency, which should be detected and treated by a doctor:

  • Nervousness

  • Increased irritability

  • Tingling, cold hands or feet

  • Back pain

  • Headaches / Migraines

  • Sleep disturbances / Tiredness

  • Cardiac arrhythmia

Manage stress instead of ignoring it

When it comes to stress, everyone has their very own method of switching off again. To free yourself from constant stress, it often helps to take a step back internally. This can be practiced through proven techniques for relaxation. These include yoga, meditation, tai chi, qigong and autogenic training or progressive muscle relaxation.

Or go for a jog, ride your bike a few kilometers or take a leisurely walk. Because physical exercise is still the natural regulation of the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol. But a soothing full bath can also provide maximum relaxation. No matter which method you choose, try to deal with stress in a relaxed manner.

And: Especially in stressful times, you should pay attention to a balanced magnesium budget.

Reduce stress

What should you do if your stress level doesn't lower? Permanent stress and persistent stress symptoms can promote magnesium deficiency. This is because magnesium and stress can favor each other.

Make sure you eat a balanced diet with sufficient magnesium. This is because stress is the body's reaction to an approaching threat, mobilizing all its forces to ward it off. Metabolic processes caused by stress then drain our mineral balance enormously. It is precisely then that we should take in sufficient magnesium through our food in order to replenish our mineral stores.

If you have a proven magnesium deficiency due to stress, we recommend taking a look at your blood values. In any case, you should consult your doctor. He or she will be able to advise you on how to specifically compensate for a magnesium deficiency and advise you on methods of stress reduction.
