What are Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids can be seen as a specific case of varicose veins. Typically, varicose veins occur just under the skin in the legs. In some occasions, they may occur around the anus area, this is known as hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoids are swollen and saggy blood vessels at the end of your rectum. Even though Hemorrhoids are harmless, they often cause unnecessary shame or embarrassment and even more discomfort, itching, pain and blood loss.

They occur most often between the age of 45 and 65 and affect both men and women. The easiest way to prevent Hemorrhoids is through a healthy and active lifestyle, combined with good toilet hygiene. Treatment, however, is preferred when you suffer from persistent and severe complaints.

It’s all about your veins

You can compare hemorrhoids to varicose veins in your legs but on a much more unpleasant part of your body. Watch the video and understand exactly what is going on.

What are the symptoms of Hemorrhoids²

Depending on the severity of your complaints, you may suffer from different symptoms, such as:

• itching, irritation, swelling or pain in the anus

• a burning sensation or discomfort around the anus area

• fluid, mucus or blood loss before or during defecation

• unexpected stool loss

• wobbly feeling in the lower abdomen or area around the anus

• increased pressure

• swellings and bulges on the anus

What causes Hemorrhoids?²

Increased pressure on the blood vessels around your anal sphincter is one of the most common causes of Hemorrhoids. For example, when: you squeeze too hard or sit on the toilet for extended periods. Squeezing and forcing the anal sphincter to close can disrupt the blood flow around your anus. When that happens, the pressure in the anal canal rises and leads to swelling of the veins.

These factors can lead to Hemorrhoids:

irregular bowel habits and straining during bowel movements
sitting for long periods of time
pregnancy
eating a low-fiber diet
having chronic diarrhoea or constipation
obesity and sedentary life
regular heavy lifting
aging

Internal vs external Hemorrhoids²

You can suffer from two different types of Hemorrhoids: internal and external Hemorrhoids. While we differentiate between the two, external Hemorrhoids are just an extension of the internal ones. Both external and internal Hemorrhoids can lead to complaints such as itching, irritation, pain and swelling and blood loss. With external Hemorrhoids, the symptoms are much more severe.

Hemorrhoids: divided into 4 stages of severity²

Hemorrhoids are a progressive condition. Overall, we discern between four stages. The two first stages are treatable with oral or topical treatments. The latter two mainly require surgical procedures. The earlier the stage, the easier it is to treat Hemorrhoids.
