Diabetes and Magnesium deficiency

Magnesium deficiency is particularly widespread in people with diabetes. The reason for this is permanently elevated blood glucose levels. As a result, magnesium is increasingly excreted in the urine or otherwise withdrawn from the blood.

Consequential diseases

If magnesium is permanently lacking, secondary diseases of diabetes are favored: For example, the risk of cardiovascular disease, which is already higher in diabetics, is increased. The severity of retinal diseases also increases. In addition, without magnesium it is more difficult to normalize the disturbed sugar metabolism.

How can magnesium support people with type 2 diabetes?

A balanced magnesium level helps the cells in type 2 diabetes to respond better to insulin again. Magnesium also helps protect against secondary diseases, for example cardiovascular diseases or damage to the kidneys, eyes and nerves.

As a diabetic, do you regularly consult your doctor about a regular magnesium intake?

What is the daily magnesium requirement for diabetes?

The Society for Magnesium Research recommends a daily dose of 240 to 480 mg for diabetes.

Important: Diabetics with impaired kidney function are strongly advised to take magnesium only after consulting their doctor.
