After all, straightening teeth is often not only a lengthy, but also an unpleasant affair: it is not uncommon for braces to be accompanied by pain. Why do braces cause pain in the mouth?

With new braces, it's often not just the teeth that hurt, but the entire mouth area. The insides of the cheeks, lips as well as the tongue and gums first have to get used to the braces - and react very sensitively to even small elevations of the braces with pressure and sore spots. Normally, the mucous membrane should have become accustomed to the braces after a few days, and after a few weeks it already feels quite normal.
What helps when braces cause pain?
It is not uncommon for fixed braces to be accompanied by pain in the mouth. They can really rub against the oral mucosa and cause pressure points. The gums can also become irritated and inflamed. The result is painful gingivitis. Braces are nevertheless the method of choice when it comes to a beautiful smile. With a few tips, you can avoid this pain of braces:
Braces & Gum Care
Brushing your teeth several times a day is the basis for a healthy oral cavity. Due to the thorough cleaning, an electric toothbrush may be particularly useful with fixed braces. Pain and dental problems can only be prevented by permanent intensive care. An antibacterial mouth rinse may also be suitable.
Proper nutrition
In addition to proper cleaning, diet is also an essential factor for our dental health. Sweets and acidic drinks should only be consumed in moderation - this also applies to brace wearers. Gums and teeth are then less affected.
Protect pressure points
The brackets or protruding ends of wires can quickly sting and irritate the oral cavity. Orthodontic wax helps here: Simply tear off a small piece of wax and press it against the stinging area of the braces. This provides relief not only during the day between meals, but also overnight.
Treat inflammation
If fixed braces cause pain or if the braces have inflamed the gums, an anti-inflammatory gel with chamomile flowers can help. Gargling with chamomile tea is also recommended to relieve pain. Braces wearers often find this pleasant.
When to see a doctor for braces pain?
It is not uncommon for small sores, aphthae, bleeding gums or gingivitis to develop. Braces are not pleasant, especially in the beginning.
Many pains caused by braces subside after some time. This is because wounds in the mouth generally heal very quickly, as cell division is particularly high here. If the complaints persist for a longer period of time, it is advisable to visit the orthodontist again. He can bend or kink protruding wires so that they cannot lead to inflammation.
