What side effects does dehydration have?
At first glance, dehydration may not seem like a big problem and can be easily solved with increased fluid intake. However, it must be said that dehydration should definitely not be underestimated. Severe dehydration can lead to a number of health complications, both mild and serious. So, what are the risks of dehydration?
About dehydration
Dehydration is a condition caused by the loss of too much fluid. Dehydration occurs when you lose more fluid than you take in and your body does not have enough fluid to function properly.
Certain groups of people are at increased risk of dehydration; these include the elderly, infants and young children, people with chronic illnesses, people who take medications that cause increased sweating or frequent urination, and people who exercise or work outdoors during warm weather.
Causes of dehydration

The possible causes of dehydration include increased sweating, diarrhea, vomiting, increased urine production which may be caused by taking certain medications, fever and flu, and last but not least, inadequate fluid intake. Dehydration can also be aggravated by certain foods and drinks.
If you are experiencing symptoms of dehydration, you should especially avoid overly salty and sugary foods, alcohol, and caffeinated drinks.
What side effects are associated with dehydration?

Symptoms of dehydration vary based on whether it is mild or moderate to severe dehydration. Symptoms of mild dehydration mainly include thirst, concentrated dark urine, dry lips, fatigue, headache, constipation, dry skin, and mild dizziness.
And how does moderate to severe dehydration manifest itself? It is most often signalled by severe thirst, low blood pressure, rapid pulse, muscle cramps, pale skin, and rapid breathing.
Let's take a closer look at some of the symptoms and unpleasant health problems that dehydration can cause.
Dehydration and headaches
Headaches are one of the most common symptoms of dehydration, and you may experience this symptom even with mild dehydration. A headache caused by dehydration can be mild to severe and can be felt in just one spot, but can also be felt all over the head. It is usually a dull ache, but the pain can be sharp. The headache may get worse when you bend or move your head.
A dehydration headache usually occurs with other symptoms such as tiredness, thirst, or dry mouth.
Dehydration and anxiety
Can dehydration lead to the development of anxiety? Yes, several studies have suggested a link between dehydration and a higher risk of anxiety. According to these studies, adequate drinking has a positive effect not only on physical health but also on mental health.
Dehydration, on the other hand, can worsen mood and increase the likelihood of anxiety and depression.
Dehydration and dizziness
Another common symptom of dehydration is dizziness. When you experience dizziness associated with dehydration, you may also experience nausea, a need to sit or lie down, and symptoms may worsen when you stand or move.
However, in addition to dehydration, a number of other conditions can cause dizziness, such as migraines, cervical spine blockage, anxiety or inner ear problems.
Dehydration and heart rate
Is there a link between dehydration and heart palpitations? Yes, because when the body is dehydrated, the heart has to work harder to pump blood, which can lead to an increased heart rate and strong palpitations.
In some cases, dehydration can also cause an electrolyte imbalance (low levels of magnesium, sodium, and other minerals), which can again lead to palpitations.
Serious risks of dehydration
In addition to the above health problems, untreated dehydration can increase the risk of heart and blood vessel diseases, increase the risk of urinary tract infection, and contribute to the formation of urinary and kidney stones manifested by sharp kidney pain. Dehydration slows down digestion, leading to difficult bowel movements, stomachache, bloating, and temporary weight gain.
Severe dehydration can also result in hallucinations, unconsciousness, shock, and in extreme cases can lead to death.
