Sleep research in a hospital?
When a patient with sleep problems is referred to hospital by their GP, the doctors first have them complete a very detailed questionnaire and carry out an extensive clinical examination. If necessary, a sleep study will be scheduled.
During the sleep study you will stay overnight in the hospital in a single room. Brain activity, heart rate, breathing, muscle tension and depth of sleep at night are also measured. A pulmonary specialist, a neurologist and an NTE specialist are involved in your treatment. The camera can also be used to observe your nighttime sleep.
When is a sleep study done in the hospital?
Such a sleep study can determine, for example, whether you suffer from sleep apnoea and whether it is still safe to drive a car. In some cases, a sleep test can also be done at home.
It is quite possible that a sleep test will not reveal any underlying health problem. In this case, sleep training (cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia) for adults may help. However, working on good sleep hygiene or checking to see if your mattress needs replacing can also be part of the solution.

The result of this test should not be considered a substitute for a visit to a doctor or pharmacist. Always consult a physician if you have trouble sleeping.
It is possible that your sleep problems have a medical cause that requires further sleep testing at a hospital.
