The use of prescription sleeping pills is sometimes discouraged because of their addictive effects and possible side effects, among other things. But what alternatives are there for those who have sleep problems and want nothing more than a better night's sleep? Natural sleep aids may be a solution. After all, unlike heavy sleep aids, natural sleep aids are not addictive and have little to no side effects.

This article answers the following questions:

Natural sleep aids ideal in combination with rest and relaxation

Up to 40% of cases, stress, agitation and anxiety are at the root of sleep problems. We live in a hectic society full of obligations. We also take the stress of the day to our bed. How often are you busy just before you go to sleep? Inserting a moment of rest just before you go to sleep without too many stimuli will undoubtedly benefit your sleep.

For good sleep hygiene, it is also important that you definitely put away your smartphone and turn off your computer at least one hour before you go to sleep. After all, the blue light prevents the natural production of melatonin. This keeps your body thinking that it needs to stay alert. In addition, everything we see on social media provides too much stimulation, which means we don't have enough mental peace just before bed.

Also, don't drink too much caffeine in the afternoon and try to keep a regular sleep rhythm: going to sleep and getting up at about the same time is crucial.

Natural sleep triggers: an overview

In addition to rest and relaxation, a natural remedy can also ensure that you have a peaceful night. After all, there are several natural sources that are known for their calming effect and sleep-inducing properties. Discover them in what follows.

Chamomile

Chamomile has also been attributed with a calming and soothing effect, although not much research has been done on it. In any case, drinking a cup of chamomile tea before bedtime won't hurt as part of your sleep routine. After all, it contains no theine and caffeine.

Melatonin

This substance is produced in the pineal gland. It signals to your body that it is time to go to sleep. Its production starts in the evening when it gets dark, peaks at night and drops again towards morning. Melatonin can also be taken in an artificial form. A drug containing only melatonin will have the greatest effect on people whose biorhythms are disturbed by jet lag or night shifts, for example.

Lavender

For centuries, lavender has been used for its calming effect. Several studies have also shown that lavender actually contributes to a good night's sleep.

From the flowers, an essential oil can be obtained via steam distillation, which makes the effect even more powerful. This form is fairly new in Belgium, but has been around for years in the other European countries.

Passion Flower

The passion flower grows naturally in warmer parts of North and South America. It is therefore used by indigenous people as a natural sleep aid. In the Western world, the effects of Passiflora incarnata have been extensively studied scientifically. Especially the dry extract of the passion flower has a clinically proven effect that contributes to a good and healthy night's sleep.

The above ingredients are available as natural sleep aids from pharmacies and are a safe alternative to sleep medication. Usually, natural sleep aids, due to their sedative effect, only help you fall asleep or only help you sleep through. Recently, there have also been drugs available that stimulate both falling asleep and staying asleep.
