FRUCTOSIN®:
- FRUCTOSiN® - For the treatment of fructose malabsorption.
FRUCTOsin® is a medical device containing Xylose isomerase and is used for the treatment of fructose malabsorption. It converts fructose into glucose in the small intestine and thus relieves the symptoms of fructose malabsorption. - FRUCTOsin® is able to convert enzymatically approx. 6.2 g fructose into glucose in the small intestine.
- Without histamine, lactose or gluten. Free from preservatives and synthetic flavouring agents.
You can get information on the action and possible adverse effects of this medicinal product in the package information leaflet, or from your physician or pharmacist.
How does FRUCTOSiN® work?
Fructose is absorbed by the body in the intestine. With fructose malabsorption, the body is unable to absorb fructose in the intestine sufficiently. This leads to excess fructose in the digestive tract. The bacterial breakdown of fructose results in the symptoms of fructose malabsorption such as stomach cramps, nausea and impaired intestinal function. On account of its biochemical properties, the enzyme xylose isomerase creates a balanced ratio of fructose and glucose, thus preventing the symptoms of fructose malabsorption. Due to the fast absorption of glucose from the intestine, the glucose is converted back to fructose to a lesser extent only.
Glucose and fructose have the same energy content, but insulin is needed for metabolization of glucose in the body. Therefore, diabetics must count the fructose present in foodstuffs as glucose when taking FRUCTOSiN®. One positive side-effect is that, unlike fructose, glucose is able to control the sense of hunger and satiation in the body. Consequently, the glucose converted by FRUCTOSiN® indicates to the body that it is full in good time, thus preventing intake of unnecessary calories.
