Zinc participates in more than 300 enzyme processes. In this, zinc is important for metabolic processes and for the formation of new cells and tissues. Zinc also contributes to the protection of cells against oxidative stress and necessary for a well-functioning immune system.

Generally, zinc is found in animal products (meat and hard cheese). Among vegetables, only legumes and whole grain products are considered good sources of zinc. A daily intake of 10 milligrams is recommended for men and 7 milligrams for women. Pregnant and nursing women require more. The daily intake of zinc should not exceed 25 milligrams daily, since high doses can have negative effects on the absorption of copper.
